Trying to be kind?!
So, I had a flight out of Narita International Airport in a week. Then, I had someone ask a favor to bring some things to an event on the 13th. Based on the information that I received, they said it was food wrapping. So, I assumed it was compact food wrappings, thinking it was not a lot. So, trying to be kind, I said okay. Then the drama began.
They ordered the things they needed. One day, when I got home, there was a giant box full of rice ball packs. I was astonished. There were 1800 pieces in a giant box. I told them it was too big. It was over the size limit that airline companies stated.
So, I told them I needed to purchase a smaller box and pack them tightly so it all fits. So, I did, after consulting with them and deciding on the course of action. Then there were 7 bags left. So, I gave them to the friend of the person who asked the favor.
After everything was packed, he called and asked if I could bring all of it. In that moment, I wrote a rule in my mind: when somebody asks for a favor, first decline or ask specifically what the item is and how many. Along with the rule-making moment, I was pissed and astonished by the audacity of what he asked after deciding on the course of action. So, I let his friend bring another slightly bigger box (still within the airline size allowance) and repacked the whole thing.
Another drama unfolded when I checked in. Because of the typhoon that was approaching Japan, the captain on the flight decided to put a limit on how many extra pieces of luggage were allowed. So, there wasn’t any guarantee the second piece of luggage would be on board. So, I checked my bag and sat down to wait. While I was waiting, I contacted the favor person and said that there was a chance that the luggage may need to stay in Japan. I was so ready to send the box to his friend. Then he called back and said that he knows the manager who is overseeing the flight and asked me to talk to him. Here is something I should say about myself. I really don’t like to play favorites or bother someone who is doing their job. There are other people who are watching, and I feel embarrassed or uncomfortable asking to make an exception for me. Why would they? Because if they make an exception for me, then they kinda need to make an exception for everybody else. So, I asked for the manager and told them the item is the person’s, and he knew. However, as soon as I was ready to check in the second piece of luggage, a lady approached the person. That lady was in front of me, and she and her family had so much extra luggage ( my guess was that they get to visit Mongolia once in a few years and have so much luggage). The lady was saying that we were told to wait until two o’clock, and why she (meaning me) was going ahead with the second luggage. She is absolutely right. It is abusing one’s position or overusing the privilege that comes with the position. So, after an awkward encounter with the person, they took the luggage, and I paid for it. After the whole interaction finished, I felt so bad and embarrassed by the whole situation. I did ask the person to tell the overseeing manager, “Thank you and sorry.”
The flight from Japan to Mongolia was pleasant. I sat next to the emergency exit, which comes with few restrictions, like no backpack under the seat that is in front of me and no loose stuff. One thing that annoyed me was that two different flight attendants said two different things. The seat next to me was empty, so I put my small bag there, and it was not loose. One flight attendant seemed okay with it, but then another came over and said it needed to be in the overhead compartment. So I found the whole situation annoying. Otherwise it was totally fine.
So, I will be relaxing for the next few days and helping my parents before heading back.
I hope you all have a nice time.
